New Claims Procedures

Subject: New Claims Procedures

Dated: July 8, 1999

The University of Maryland has been notified by the State Treasurer's Office that effective July 1st, 1999 changes are being mandated in the first party loss recovery program. As you are aware, the State of Maryland reimburses state government units for covered losses.

The State Treasurer has made the following changes in our first party loss recovery program.

  1. UM units must notify the Department of Environmental Safety (DES) as soon as possible (within 24 hours) of any loss to insure State coverage. All claims should be reported to the Insurance Claims Coordinator. The insurance Claims Coordinator may be notified via email (insurance@umd.edu), fax (301) 405-2391 or (301) 314-9294, or call (301) 405-3964. DES must notify the State Treasurer's Office within 24 hours of the notification of the loss.
  2. Upon approval by the State Insurance Division, the affected University unit must pay the certified claim and then seek reimbursement from the State within 60 days of the authorization. Claims older than 60 days will not be reimbursed. The affected University unit will make claim payment and DES will seek reimbursement from the State.
  3. DES, effective immediately, will charge each first party loss claim the state-required $1,000 deductible plus a $150 processing fee prior to claim processing.
